Man sends supplements to troops, and the “psychological immune system”: Now I’ve seen everything!

Spock
Filed under the category of “Fringe News”, here are two of the odder news stories I came across today:

Larry Thrasher’. of Hartselle, Alabama, recently brought 66,000 packets of nutritional supplements to the Alabama National Guard units stationed in Iraq. He has implored several surrounding churches, businesses and individuals to help with his crusade to bring much-needed nutritional drinks to troops in Baghdad. Read more.

Psychologist Dan Gilbert challenges the idea that we’ll be miserable if we don’t get what we want. Our “psychological immune system” lets us feel real, enduring happiness, he says, even when things don’t go as planned. He calls this kind of happiness “synthetic happiness,” and he says it’s “every bit as real and enduring as the kind of happiness you stumble upon when you get exactly what you were aiming for.” Watch the video.

(But actually, these are both pretty interesting!)

Hot peppers take nasal irrigation “to a new level”

peppers
I just happened to be eating from a small bag of jalapeno peppers I asked the sandwich artist to put them on the side when I came across this press release for a new product that infuses extracts of hot peppers into a nasal rinse.

These nasal rinses, also called neti pots, which are used to improve sinus health and allergy symptoms, have had a recent surge in popularity due to a televised demonstration on Oprah. (Look for the video link half way down the page.)

I can’t comment on the effectiveness of this product, but if it’s anything like the handful of jalapenos I just finished off…let’s just say I’m breathing free right now!

More men taking supplements.

While women still the main purchasers of supplemental and nutriceutical products, men are increasingly turning to supplements as well, and not just for the good old “protein shakes” of the past.

Oral health: the body’s immune system gateway

chimp smile
I hadn’t thought of oral hygiene in terms of our body’s immune health until I noticed this video.

While I would issue the caveat that this is an advertising video for both laser treatment in general and a specific dental practice in particular, the first part has some interesting things to say about teeth and their connection to the rest of the body.

This short video about the immune system leaves you wanting more, but it’s a good place to start learning about how it works.

Corporate coverups and hormones in your milk.

In case you missed The Corporation, or just forgot what you saw, a book has come out telling some of those same stories, in particular the one about the Fox News employees who were fired over their attempt to report about the Monsanto Company’s dangerous hormone, rBGH. Care to guess which company was a major sponsor of Fox news at the time?
